Home security is more important than ever – especially in the winter months, when darkness aids the burglar’s progress. Although the initiative for home security runs all year round, the official month for Home Security Awareness takes place in Autumn, just in time for the winter period.
Why is awareness of home security important?
A burglary takes place on average every 40 seconds in the UK – 40% of the time, the house is empty while it happens. In 2016 an incredible 551,000 people in the UK were targeted by burglars.
Most commonly stolen are electrical devices, cash and jewellery – burglars can get what they want in as little as 8 minutes. Only around 9% of burgled items are ever recovered.
But despite these statistics, many of us in the UK simply aren’t concerned enough about home security! 70% of homeowners have no burglar alarm, 16% don’t bother to lock their windows and doors on leaving the house, and 25% of Brits admit to having no security in their home at all. Considering that a home with no alarm system is 300% more likely to be burgled, there are many events which could be avoidable!
How can I boost my home security?
There are many ways to keep your home secure while you’re out or asleep. This begins with the front door, which should be manufactured securely to have a part Q compliant multipoint locking system. Most thieves can tell by looking at a door whether they’ll be able to break in – dissuade them from ever trying by making sure you have either an AV2 or AV2E lock.
Modern technology is a great help to home security. Implementing CCTV in or around your home helps you to keep an eye on the property, while automatic-timer switches can turn lights on and off to give the appearance that someone is home.
The perimeter of your home is also vulnerable, especially if you have a garden. Secure all gates, keep your hedges trimmed, and ensure fences are in good repair. A motion-sensor light is a great help in dissuading criminals.
